State Testing

The New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) are statewide assessments that assess students’ progress toward the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science.

The New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) consists of an ELA and a Mathematics component to be administered to students in grade 11. Students must show proficiency in Mathematics and ELA to be eligible for high school graduation.

  •  ELA assessments will focus on close reading, synthesizing ideas within and across texts, determining the meaning of words and phrases in context, and writing effectively when using and/or analyzing sources.
  • Mathematics assessments will focus on applying skills and concepts and understanding multi-step problems that require abstract reasoning and modeling real-world problems, precision, perseverance, and strategic use of tools.
  •  Science assessments will focus on applying scientific concepts and practices within the domains of Earth & space, life, and physical science.

Students will demonstrate their acquired skills and knowledge by answering selected-response items, constructed response items and technology-enhanced questions.

Career Testing

ASVAB- The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Career Exploration Program is a widely used and respected career development program and test.  The ASVAB will be available, free of charge, to all interested students in grades 10-12.  There is no military obligation in taking the exam.  Developed by the Department of Defense, the ASVAB Career Exploration Program helps students to identify potential careers in both military and civilian arenas.  Although the military uses this test to identify occupational specialists, students who plan to attend college or technical schools will also benefit from the program, as it can help them to focus their interests on relevant career paths. If you’re interested in taking this exam, please speak with your counselor.

More information about the ASVAB can be found HERE.

Testing for College Admission:

ACT and SAT- These are standardized tests created by ACT and Collegeboard that measure students’ readiness for college. Some colleges require students to submit test scores as part of their application review process. For more information or to register, click here: SAT or ACT

Testing Accommodations:

Students who have IEP or 504 plans that allow for testing accommodations may also be eligible for accommodations on the ACT and PSAT/SAT/AP

exams. Because these are private testing companies, requesting accommodations requires a separate application. As always, we encourage you to discuss this with your school counselor.
