National Honor Society (West)

The primary activity of the National Honor Society is providing a tutoring service to all students.  The annual induction ceremony and reception is held in the fall or winter of the school year.  Membership is considered one of the highest honors bestowed upon a student.  However, if a student falls below the standards upon which he/she is elected to membership, he/she can be dropped from the chapter upon the recommendation of the Faculty Council of the National Honor Society.

For a student to be inducted into the National Honor Society, he/she must meet the following four criteria:

  1. At the end of sophomore year, a student must have a weighted CUMULATIVE grade point average of 6.0 or higher.
  2. After eligibility is determined, the entire West faculty (administrators, teachers and staff), will review the list of candidates and provide feedback to the committee on students’ academic achievement, character, attitude, attendance and general commitment to the West community. NOTE: Students may be denied admittance to NHS if they have excessive attendance or disciplinary issues; students will be denied admittance if they have any documented incidences of plagiarism or cheating.
  3. After successful completion of steps 1 and 2, selected students must submit two character references from those who can explain in detail about the student and the type of person he/she is outside of West.  This person can be a coach, employer, or religious leader, a scout master, a camp counselor, etc..; it may not be a classroom teacher or member of your family.  These references are then reviewed by a faculty committee appointed by the school principal.
  4. Students must submit documentation that they have performed 25 hours of community service in the year immediately preceding the year of induction beginning on July 1.  Note: The service hours can not be performed in school for a school activity.  The documentation can not be signed by the student’s family member.
