Deadline to Submit Rosa Middle School Open Enrollment Paperwork is March 29, 2019

A Rosa Reminder for parents of 5th grade students who participated in the Rosa Middle School open enrollment process for the 2019-2020 school year: You must return your decisions to accept or decline placement, or to remain or be removed from the waitlist, to the Central Registration office either in person or by mail by Friday, March 29, 2019.

Update on State of New Jersey's Funding for CHPS

After the New Jersey Department of Education announced on Thursday, March 7, 2019, that the Cherry Hill Public Schools (CHPS) will receive $18,424,908 in aid for the 2019-2020 school year, members of the Fair Funding for Cherry Hill Schools Committee, CHPS Administration, the Cherry Hill Board of Education, and Cherry Hill Township met with Assemblypersons Lou Greenwald and Pamela Lampitt on Friday, March 8 to express concerns about the funding. Board of Education Seeks Input on Bond Referendum from Residents without Children Currently in the School System

The bond referendum designed to address many of the facility needs across our 19 schools failed in December 2018. The Board of Education must regroup and design an approach to the facility needs that will meet with the approval of the voters and enable Cherry Hill to provide safe, well-functioning and positive environments for our students and staff.

Before the next steps are taken, the Board of Education is seeking community members' feedback, constructive criticism and recommendations for moving forward. (Similar surveys were emailed to all Cherry Hill Public Schools parents and employees on March 6, 2019.) The responses to this survey will be openly and thoughtfully considered in the weeks ahead. Paper copies of the survey also are available at the Cherry Hill Public Library. Please take 5-10 minutes by March 27th to anonymously contribute to this important process. Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Road Work on Brace Road Near Borton Mill Road to Cause Delays

Brace Road near Bortons Mill Road will be heavily congested from Monday March 4, 2019 through 5 pm Friday, March 8.

24-hour road work will create traffic congestion, backups and delays. Alternate routes are South Kings Highway or Springdale Road. School buses will be able to get through, but bus delays are expected.

A Statement from the Cherry Hill Board of Education and Administration Regarding Our Fair Funding Crisis

Cherry Hill Board of Education President Mr. Eric Goodwin and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Meloche have released a statement regarding the years of inadequate funding for our schools. Community members are invited to the Fair Funding Committee Meetings on the fourth Thursday of the month. Next meeting: Thursday, March 28, 2019 at 7 pm, Malberg Administration Building.

An Important Message from Dr. Joseph Meloche, Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parents and Community Members,

I am having surgery on Monday, January 14th and will be out of the district for at least two months.

I have been going through a series of tests since September and I must have the Mitral Valve and the Aortic Valve in my heart replaced. During an open heart procedure two mechanical valves will replace the current valves.

The prognosis is positive and I am with a wonderful team of doctors and an excellent surgeon.

I will be completely out of touch with the district for a couple of weeks. During my absence, I have no doubt that the great work that goes on in each of the buildings will continue on a daily basis.

In my absence, CHPS community members should follow the normal chain of command regarding any questions or concerns. This means starting at the building level with your child's teacher, contacting your building principal if the concern is not resolved, and, if the concern still remains unresolved, contacting Assistant Superintendent Dr. Justin Smith at justsmith@chclc.org or (856) 429-5600 extension 4301.

All district business will continue as usual. Board of Education meetings and Board Committee meetings also will take place as scheduled.

Preliminary Results of December 11, 2018 Bond Referendum Special Election Show "No" Vote on All 3 Questions

The preliminary results of the December 11, 2018 Bond Referendum Special Election show a "no" vote for all three questions presented to voters. Absentee ballots that are postmarked today, December 11, 2018 will still be accepted by the election office and counted as long as they are received by December 13th.

The Administration and Board will engage in discussion at the Board of Education Meeting on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 regarding the next election date.

CHPS Earns Placement on 9th Annual AP District Honor Roll

The Cherry Hill Public Schools is one of 373 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 9th Annual AP® District Honor Roll. To be included on the 9th Annual Honor Roll, CHPS had to, since 2016, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP.

National data from 2018 show that among American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students with a high degree of readiness for AP, only about half are participating. The first step to getting more of these students to participate is to give them access. Courses must be made available, gatekeeping must stop, and doors must be equitably opened. The Cherry Hill Public School District is committed to expanding the availability of AP courses among prepared and motivated students of all backgrounds.

"Success in Advanced Placement is a combination of students' own motivation and the opportunities educators provide for them," said Trevor Packer, senior vice president of AP and Instruction at the College Board. "I'm inspired by the teachers and administrators in this district who have worked to clear a path for more students of all backgrounds to earn college credit during high school."

Helping more students learn at a higher level and earn higher AP scores is an objective of all members of the AP community, from AP teachers to district and school administrators to college professors.

Inclusion in the 9th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on a review of three years of AP data, from 2016 to 2018, looking across 38 AP Exams, including world language and culture. The following criteria were used.

Districts must:

  • Increase participation/access to AP by at least 4% in large districts, at least 6% in medium districts, and at least 11% in small districts;
  • Increased or maintained the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students taking exams and increased or maintained the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students scoring 3+ on at least one AP Exam; and
  • Improve or maintain performance levels when comparing the 2018 percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher to the 2016 percentage, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70% of its AP students earn a 3 or higher.
  • The College Board also has recognized the Cherry Hill Public Schools for achieving its outcomes among an AP student population in which 30% or more are underrepresented minority students (American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander) and/or 30% or more are low-income students (students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch).


    Board of Education Adopts Resolution on Underfunding in State Aid to Schools

    The Board of Education on March 13, 2018 adopted a Resolution calling for New Jersey Commissioner of Education Dr. Lamont Repollet and New Jersey Governor Philip Murphy either to put forth a spending plan that fully funds the School Funding Reform Act (SFRA) or, in the event the SFRA cannot be fully funded, make sure the funds available for state aid to schools be fairly and proportionally divided per the SFRA. The resolution further resolved that if full redistribution is not possible this year, that sufficient additional monies be allocated to Underadequacy Aid to close the adequacy gap. A copy of the resolution has been present to the New Jersey Commissioner of Education, the Governor of New Jersey, the State Senator and the State Assemblypersons from Legislative District 6, and the Mayor and Council President of Cherry Hill.
